Run a Deep Search

A Deep Search looks up a type of business in a place, such as "dental clinics" in one state. It searches Google Maps page by page, and every business it finds becomes a company in Signalsant.

Before you start#

• You need the Moderator role or higher to start a search. Anyone in the team can view searches.
• Decide on a short query that names the kind of business, such as "roofing contractors" or "coworking spaces".

Steps#

1. Open Companies → Deep search in the sidebar, or click Deep search on the Companies page.
2. Click New deep search.
3. Fill in the form:
   • Query (required, at least 2 characters), for example dental clinics.
   • Country and State (both required).
   • City (optional). Leave it as Any city in state to search every city in the state.
   • Max Pages per city, or Max Pages for this city once you pick a city: from 1 to 50, default 10. Each page is one page of Maps results.
4. Click Start search.

You'll see "Deep search started" and the search's page opens. Progress updates live; you don't need to refresh.

How big will it be?#

• With a city, the search runs up to Max Pages pages for that city.
• Without a city, it runs up to Max Pages for every city in the state. Signalsant warns you that this "can queue a large number of jobs". Start with one city to try a query out.

You can't search a whole country in one go; choose a state.

When it finishes#

You get a notification and an email: "Deep Search complete", with how many companies were found and how many pages failed, if any. Click View results to open it.

Troubleshooting#

• "Enter a search query" / "Select a country" / "Select a state": fill in the required field.
• Few results:
  • try a broader query ("restaurants" rather than "vegan ramen");
  • try a bigger city;
  • raise Max Pages.
• The search shows Failed: every page failed. Use Restart from the ⋯ menu. See Deep Search results and statuses.
